San Francisco is serious about its bridges. Bay Area bridges are works have to do triple duty, as art, commuter lifelines, and civic symbols. So it makes sense that so much time and money have been spent—and will be spent—to replace the east span of the Bay Bridge. Despite all the delays and cost overruns, when it′s completed in (cross your fingers) 2013, the bridge will be a testament to government foresight and competence. In its revolutionary self-anchored suspension design, the new Bay Bridge will balance ingenuity and elegance, strength and flexibility. It will face the next big earthquake with calm and creativity. And in the meantime it will still get several hundred thousand people to work and back every day. Even that conceited Golden Gate should be impressed.
