We talk a lot about exciting new buildings, but this episode explores an even more fundamental project: new land. To make the Port of Rotterdam, Europe′s biggest port, even bigger, the Netherlands needs new coastline. And the only way to get that is to build it. So they′re using all the resources of a country expert at taking land from water—and then keeping the water in its place—to build Maasvlakte 2, three square miles of new land extending into the North Sea. It′s a massive project of dredging and moving sand, working against strong currents at an incredible rate. Because the sooner they can get it done, the sooner Rotterdam can accommodate the demands of bigger, faster global trade.
