An airport is a city′s front door. How to enter, yes, but also the first hint of what′s inside. And right now the front door to Mumbai is . . . less than welcoming. An incredible number of visitors squeeze through the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport every day, at a rate that accelerates as fast as India′s economy. 24 million travelers a year, and rising. The chaotic portal simply has to be expanded, without interrupting the 400 daily flights. Sort of like doing construction work on your foyer while throwing a giant party. The architects (from Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill) have accepted the challenge and gone beyond, designing an airport that′s spacious, high-tech, graceful, and grounded in Indian culture. That′s a door that invites one to enter.
