When you think about multi-tasking, maybe you picture someone reading the newspaper on the treadmill or shaving during the morning commute. When I think about multi-tasking (while shaving, of course), I think about the new Storm Management and Road Tunnel in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. To deal with the constant dilemma of flooding in the city, engineers designed the world′s first dual-purpose tunnel that alleviates both traffic and water overflow. Kuala Lumpur first put itself on the architectural map with the stunning Patronas Towers. Now, with SMART, it has as much impressive design underground as it does above. Most of the time, SMART works as a dual-level road tunnel with water flowing through the city beneath the roads. But when flooding is imminent, the tunnel is evacuated and water is allowed to flow through the entire tunnel, averting disaster and dumping the water harmlessly into a reservoir. And what makes SMART even smarter? The 250-million dollar project is being paid off through tolls from the very people who drive through this incredible feat of engineering every day. Possibly while shaving. Now that′s multi-tasking.
