This incredible twisting structure looms over the city of Madrid and, at 700 feet, is one of Spain′s tallest buildings. Designed by world-famous architect Henry Cobb, the Torre Espacio is stunning to look at, yes, but it′s even more impressive when you know how it was built. The tower was constructed mostly out of concrete, a material that is much easier than steel to form into the tilted column shapes needed to create its distinctive twisting shape. But concrete has one major drawback: a time limit. To use the mixed concrete before it hardened and destroyed their equipment, the crew had to build at the Torre Espacio at the incredible rate of a floor per week. Because of the speed with which this work had to be done, I got to watch workers build an entire floor of this Spanish monument. I tried to help a little, but mostly my job was to get out of the way and marvel.
