Los Angeles is a desert. And I′m not saying that Hollywood is an intellectual wasteland or that its collective imagination is infertile. The city is literally a desert. Los Angeles has to bring its water in from nearby rivers, the Colorado River being the largest. There′s plenty of water in these rivers, but thanks to environmental laws protecting the mating habits of salmon and what have you, water can only be drawn from them during limited times. And how do you get more liquid in less time? You get a bigger straw—in this case, a huge system of crazy tunnels along the San Andreas fault line. You know, you could make a great action flick out of this project. I′m thinking Denzel in the lead. And he′s got a smart-alecky sidekick from New York . . .
