Parched by drought and surrounded by ocean, the state of Victoria in southeastern Australia calls to mind the Ancient Mariner: Water, water, everywhere, nor any drop to drink. Global warming has rendered a dry climate even drier, and with the population increasing in Melbourne and surrounding areas, even massive conservation efforts aren′t enough. Lacking dependable rainfall, Victoria has decided seawater is the answer, after all. It′s building a desalination plant that, when it′s completed at the end of this year, will be able to provide Melbourne with a third of its water needs. (Water, water, everywhere—wanna drink?) And the designers are managing to do it in a way that doesn′t disturb the coastline, destroy the ecology, or distract from the epic surfing. Read on to learn more. It is, as the Aussies would say, pretty wicked.
