University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, designed by world-renowned architect Peter Eisenman, is one of the most functional pieces of American sports architecture ever built. The massive roof includes cleverly designed curved panels made out of "Bird Air" fabric, which allows the strong Arizona sun to reach the field while providing spectators with maximum shade. Even more impressive is the 19-million pound tray that moves the field in and out of the stadium in a matter of minutes. The first of its kind in the United States, this sliding field sits outside in the sun on off-days so it can keep the grass as healthy as possible. And it can stay outside to avoid the wear and tear of big concerts and events. So . . . super functional. Plus it′s super cool to watch that thing move—and to see how they built it, of course.
