Sick of mowing your lawn and/or shoveling snow off your walk? Don′t want to move to an apartment? Consider trading in your plot of land for a plot of water! It sounds futuristic, but it′s happening now on the outskirts of Amsterdam. Although those floating homes aren′t so much a response to homeowner sloth as they are a simple and very Dutch answer to the question, where do we build if there′s no more land? Why, the water, of course! And floating homes are just a small part of a massive development—IJburg—they are building in a lake, on eight manmade islands. Starting literally from the ground up little more than a decade ago, they have created entire neighborhoods of homes, schools, restaurants, shops, parks, and offices. And, yes, even some lawns. It′s an even greater testament to Dutch ingenuity than the little boy who used his finger to plug a leaking dike. Although, I wouldn′t mind some footage of that, too.
