Nimitz class aircraft carriers are the largest warships in the world, requiring billions of dollars and more than seven years to build. You don′t get much bigger than that when it comes to building a mobile structure. For this episode I went aboard an active Nimitz class aircraft carrier, and it was a like stepping into an entire, self-contained, and very different world. The sheer size of a ship that is home to thousands of troops and dozens of military aircraft (not to mention a huge runway on which they can land while the ship is in the middle of the ocean) is impressive. Now take that almost unimaginable scale and think about the work and machinery that must go into building one of these things and you have some idea why I found this project exhilarating. Or, you could watch the episode.
